Super Cups
One game, one trophy, no second leg. Football's curtain-raisers put the winners of two competitions in the same stadium for ninety minutes — here is what happens when they meet.
How the fixture works
The UEFA Super Cup opens the European season: the Champions League winners against the Europa League winners, a single match on neutral ground in August. No aggregate, no away goals — level after 90 minutes and it goes straight to penalties.
The 2026 edition was played on 12 August at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, where Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2-1 to keep the trophy for a second year running.
The FA Community Shield does the same job in England: Premier League champions against FA Cup winners, one match, penalties if it is level. On 16 August 2026 it moved from Wembley to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, where Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0.
France runs the same idea under the name Trophée des Champions: Ligue 1 champions against Coupe de France winners. The 2026 edition was played on the same day as the Community Shield, at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, where Lens beat PSG 1-0 with ten men for the last hour to win the trophy for the first time.
Germany's version is the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, played between the Bundesliga champions and the DFB-Pokal winners — or the league runners-up, when the same club wins both. On 22 August 2026 it went to Dortmund, where Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to keep it for a second season.
